Sony PlayStation 3 Slim Officially Announced

It took quite long for Sony to admit it but here it is folks, the Sony PlayStation 3 Slim has finally been officially announced. The unveiling took place at their GamesCon press conference in Cologne, Germany earlier today.
The new unit features a very streamlined design, pretty similar to those images and videos that popped up on the net sometime ago. Comes together with a 120GB HDD, it is 1.5kg lighter than the original PS3 and also consumes two third of the original PS3 power. New capability added to it is Bravia Sync, where you can use the Sony Bravia TV’s remote to control you PS3 and also, vertical stand support which is available separately for a price that are yet to be determined for Asian region.
The only capability missing in this new slim unit is the Linux support which most probably will not be missed by majority of the gamers. According to the official press release from Sony, the unit will have a recommended retail price (RRP) of RM 1,060 (USD 299) which is RM 354 (USD 100) cheaper than the original PS3. Expect it to be HIGHER in Malaysia though due to taxes and other costs.
While the official press release also mentioned that the new slim unit will be available worldwide from 1st September onwards, according to Sony Malaysia’s PlayStation Evangelist, Teoh Wah Keong, the new unit MIGHT arrive slightly later than expected. He further added that, as per the original PS3 before this, the PS3 Slim will have to go through a number of process such as SIRIM certification, before it can be released to the public.
With PS3 Slim and PSPgo is expected to be released in this region soon, looks like an exciting period for PlayStation is coming just up ahead. For now, just oogle at the pictures ok?

I think the emphasis this time is on the cost savings rather than the design style. It’s… different, coming from Sony. I think we’re all used to smexxy product designs when it comes to Sony’s gadgets.
It takes a while getting used to the new look, but it’s in no way ugly. I kinda like it. PS3 needs a re-branding, and it seems that Sony is doing it now, from the new logo to the new box-art template for their games to the new package designs for the pspGO and the PS3, to the new design of the PS3 itself.
They’re getting serious about it, and it’s refreshing to observe their renewed focus.
@ Chapree: You said that PS3 Slim might come a bit later to Malaysia. How long are we talking about? Weeks? Months?

As for now, our sources (both official and unofficial) still doesn’t have any confirmed dates. The regional HQ in Hong Kong will release the console on midnight of 1st September for their market though.

Actually the PS3 slim sold through web example lelong.com.my which I think the model is from PlayStation HK and sell around 1300++ with 1 complimentary games. Add also the PS3 Slim is much lighter, much faster and much comprehensive with power consumption.
What else you want from PS3 Slim? And what is your expectation? Although No Linux No backward compatibility and no memory card slot? but what the heck? I still love PS3 Slim, its much cheaper than phat PS3 ROFL!!!
