ESWC 2009: No More New Games, World + Malaysian Finals Postponed
March 24, 2009 by Chapree

Expect such scene from ESWC 2006 Grand Finals will be downscaled this year.
The economy slowdown has hit everybody hard indeed. Competitive gaming or eSports, as a very niche market has been hit even harder. Players released from their teams, sponsorship cutdowns and downscaling of major events such as WCG European Championship is all hard proof and reality that many fans and players alike have to swallow. Now, Games-Services - the people behind Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) also face similar problem until to the extent that forcing them to postpone the ESWC 2009 Grand Finals from June to 4th quarter of this year.
In letter by ESWC’s President - Matthieu Dallon, addressed to all ESWC 2009 National Strategic Partners, revealed that none of the ESWC past partners were ready to commit financially to the 2009 events. Not only that, there will be no second ESWC official games list as the said game publishers also was not able to finalize their discussions even after 3 months of negotiations. Well, no new RTS or footie game for ESWC then.
There are tons of other things that was revealed in the letter. To read the letter yourself, point your browsers HERE.
Then comes the second bad news. At first we thought the postponement of ESWC Grand Finals will not affect ESWC Malaysia 2009. We were proven wrong then when we received an announcement earlier today, from Go International Group Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian Licensee for ESWC 2009. They have confirmed that ESWC Malaysia 2009 dates will be shifted as well.
While there are no actual reason given, but we believe that this has got to do with the earlier announcement by Games-Services. The organizer of ESWC Malaysia 2009 will further announce the new dates soon. We hope that the given extra time will provide both Go International and Games-Services extra resources to organize their events.
ESWC has been hit very hard indeed. Do you think other large scale eSports organization will be affected this hard as well? What do you think that can be done to minimize the damage? Let your thoughts roll in our comments box.

Dear gamers,
Rest assured despite the postponement, we still maintain a positive outlook for the industry. Naysayers, take heart. We feel for you. It ain’t over until the fatlady sings. I don’t hear her. All we need now is some wings beneath the wings of team Go International Group as we move swiftly ahead with ESWC 2009 preparations. We are very confident in delivering a satisfactory and exciting gaming event that brings in the fun factor with Indie Youth Fest. We are also keen on egging on a new Team Malaysia to represent our nation in France later this year. So keep your heads up and keep your fingers walking
Best,
