It is yet another medal-less year for Malaysia’s WCG team. Team Malaysia campaign at WCG 2008 Grand Finals has came to an end yesterday after our last active player, M1-Heaven crashed out at Top 16 stage in NFS ProStreet. One day earlier, Malaysia’s Counter-Strike 1.6, FIFA’08 and Starcraft players were eliminated even earlier at group stage.
For the record, the nearest Malaysia ever got to receive a WCG medal was back in 2005, where [W|nDs]Si_Jali received 4th place at the Grand Finals in Singapore. Meanwhile, we recapped their final two tournament days, right after the jump. The first day recap available HERE.

Let’s start with CS1.6. Our early predictions did not hit the mark well as UCpro|LZ failed to qualify to the next round. Beating the odds though, LZ managed to drew against the famous Roccat.GAMEPLAY of Finland. While they won against Pakistan, UAE and Macedonia, their lost to HiNet-UMX of Chinese Taipei was the sole reason behind their elimination. In total, LZ managed to accumulate 10 points and ended up as third in Group E.

Similar to CS, our FIFA representative - [W|nDs]Vin was only a point difference to qualify to Top 16. But then, his tie results in the match against Bbreak17 of India cost his WCG Grand Finals campaign dearly. He further lost another 3 points from his defeat to the Switzerland rep. Vin received his 6 points from his free win to Nigeria and Georgia who were absent from the tournament. He ended up this competition as third place in Group P with a total of 7 points.

Last but not least, Starcraft. As we pointed earlier that JohnRambo’s route beyond group stage might be stopped by KTF_Luxury of South Korea, turned out that was exactly what happened. His progress were further stopped by China’s JnSx.Lovett. For the rest of John’s group matches, he excelled it with two wins against both Russia and Costa Rica but those win ain’t enough to get him to the next stage as we hoped.

The following day, our sole representative to reach Top 16 stage, M1-Heaven also crashed out from the competition. He took a straight 2 - 0 lost by Germany’s rep, aTTaX_Sliver in NFS ProStreet who beat him in both Chicago Airfield and Infineon circuit. All in all, it was a good first time WCG Grand Finals outing for the young lad from Johor Bharu, even beating the much feared Russia’s USSRxProStreet in a group stage rematch.

M1-Heaven’s route to Top 16.
Judging from the results, for most of the games that stucked in group stage, our eSports athletes managed to end up at third place in their groups. We even got a couple of good results such as Heaven’s Top 16 achievement and Team LZ’s draw against the mighty (and feared too) Roccat.GAMEPLAY of Finland. So close yet so far. Well then, we hope that Team Malaysia will perform better next year at Chengdu, China.

actually for the record, Malaysia did achieve a medal in 05 thru mobile games. And it wasnt jst a medal, it was GOLD Medal!!
But too bad tht time d medal tally from tht game doesnt count if im not mistaken. Its quite a shame though.
Chapree: Yeah, I remember that. We should add mobile games to our National Finals coz frankly, I believe there are some mobile gamer extra ordinary waiting to be discovered.

And maybe next time, we should try to send a full fledged team. I mean, for all sets of games, you name it, Guitar Hero, Virtua Fighter etc etc.
Chapree, since you already have experience in Guitar Hero as ‘bidan terjun’ for WCG Asia, why don’t you represent Malaysia for Chengdu? xD
Chapree: No no no no, I’m strictly “bidan terjun”. In future, a proper qualifying must be done because we got couple of good Guitar Hero player, as evident at GH League couple of months ago.

till xbox is officially launch in malaysia, i dont think so
Chapree: After seeing efforts by Indonesia and Philippines, I beg to differ. These two countries didn’t receive official Xbox launch but they still have representative for Xbox (although for Indonesia, they only able to sent players only at WCG Asian due to financial strain). Not “bidan terjun” you know, it was done by proper qualifying back at their home country.
So, it is definitely can be done. It is just a matter of want or not. National Organizer, your call.
