The champions of WGT Malaysia 2008!

The World Gamemaster Tournament Malaysia Final 2008 came to an end last Sunday at Mid Valley Megamall, KL. It was quite a celebration as WGT was the final large scaled multi-games tournament of the year and the closing ceremony kinda marked the end of the season for a number of local eSports athletes out there.

All in all, it was an OK event for tournament with such a scale. Number of participants were satisfactory but the poor long waiting time for couple of games on Day 1 which was a direct result from the check-in counter mismanagement, could hurt WGT in long time. Not to forget, smaller tournament area also slowed down the tournament’s progress.

That being said, we definitely hope that WGT will return next year bigger and better. We recapped the final day of the tournament, available after the jump. We are so looking forward to 2009!

The two ESP teams - eMo and Wow.

Third placing match saw two teams from ESP - Wow and eMo pitted against each other. eMo won Search & Destroy mode with a small 8 - 7 score but then they didn’t get to kept the momentum against Wow’s charge for the next two rounds. With Domination and Team Deathmatch belonged to Wow, they received third place for their efforts.

Another ESP team - aXe, meanwhile were put against RnF for the championship title. It was pretty much one-sided match with aXe rolled over RnF completely in both Search & Destroy and Domination with 8 - 1 and 286 - 238 score respectively. Despite that, we must give a kudos to RnF especially for enduring all the verbal abuses throughout the match. It wasn’t pretty but we all knew that was adrenaline talking.

Counter-Strike 1.6

A Team Hybrid moment during the first match.

Hybrid was at the disadvantage side as they came from the lower bracket, meaning that they were trailing behind LZ.ucpro by 1 - 0. The first match was played at de_dust2. Hybrid as Counter Terrorist, at first dominated the game by five points before LZ reset all the deficit and finished the first half with a nail-biting 7 - 8 score. Not showing any sign of giving up, Hybrid forced LZ for a tie-breaker match after

The final shot by LZ marked the end of the tournament and yet another championship title for them.

de_nuke was the chosen map for the tie-breaker match. LZ started the match off as Counter Terrorist. The first half ended with them leaving Hybrid behind with a huge 10 - 5 score. Hybrid tried to pick up more points to counter the gap but unfortunately, LZ took the championship home by finishing them off with 6 - 2 score, making the overall score 16 - 7 to LZ.

FIFA’08

[MyFES]Warrior and [W|nDs]Rei at it.

At FIFA’08 side, the battle for championship were basically broke up to two clans - [MyFES] and [W|nDs]. Both clans each got themselves two players in both championship title match and 3rd place match. [W|nDs]Rei and [MyFES]Warrior went up first for 3rd place decider with both picked Barcelona as their teams. The 3rd place went to Rei as the match ended with 7 - 3 aggregate score against Warrior.

The whole [MyFES] clan celebrated Snake’s success.

As for the championship title, things were a lil bit intense as both [MyFES]Snake and [W|nDs]Vin decided to be defensive. They went all out defensive until the extent that the winner have to be decided by a penalty shootout. The shootout ended at 8 - 7 to Snake which made him the champion of WGT Malaysia 2008 in FIFA’08!

Need for Speed ProStreet

Thumbs up to yet another 3rd placing.

Third placing went out to Liang in the bummest way after his opponent, SpeedDemon doesn’t showed at all for the match. While he felt happy about another award to his name, Liang is quite disappointed at his opponent lack of fighting spirit. At this level of competition, one must more confident instead of wasting opportunities like this.

FoRza and RedbullY2k - Two NFS finalist head to head.

With different set of rule compared to previous tournaments such as WCG and CELgames, things were expected to be different this time around. While the competition are very exciting, newer players still can’t broke up domination held by veteran players such as FoRza. Save for RedbullY2k who made it to a NFS finals for the first time ever but FoRza was still the boss by dominating Redbull in 2 straight race at Infineon and Chicago Airfield.
