Singapore Calling : Upcoming Tournaments Down South This June
May 29, 2008 by Chapree

We shall meet again, Merlion.
As recently, many of Malaysian gamers have turned their attention to Singapore as their main destination for international tournaments. Thanks to their government and overall industry gaming-friendly policy, Singapore’s gaming scene are blessed with constant eSports events.
Join us as we take a look at some of those events that are scheduled to happen this coming June. Who knows, you might be interested to make a mark at the Lion City.
Let’s start with e-life@suntec Gaming Challenge, a console-only tournament spanning over a period of 4 weeks and involving all current generation consoles - PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. So, it doesn’t matter to which camp you belong to, the event got it covered.

The event offered around RM 14,000 (S$ 6,000) worth of e-life@suntec shopping voucher plus 12 Sony PSP Slim, 12 Atari games and 6 Xbox 360 games. Games featured in this competition are:
- PlayStation 3: Winning Eleven 2008, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Race Driver: GRID (side tournament)
- Xbox 360: Guitar Hero 3, Halo 3 (2vs2), Virtua Fighter 5
- Wii: Rayman Raving Rabbids 2
In case you are wondering, e-life@suntec is the digital lifestyle area of Suntec City Mall and located at Level 2 of the established shopping mall. Although Week 1 of the event is already over and Week 2 will be this weekend, you still can catch the final qualifier weekend which will happen from 15th to 16th June.
But then, the one week gap between final qualifier and tournament finals on Week 4 (21st - 22nd June) could possessed a big travel problem for Malaysian who want to join the event. Still, if you able to join and want to get some competitive console gaming fix, you cannot miss this event. Also, bring along one or two Ramly Burgers…you might need it.

Next up is the The New Paper Cyber Challenge 2008. Organized by a Singapore’s tabloid (hence The New Paper name), the event will take place from 5th to 8th June at Funan DigitaLife Mall featuring 5 games from EA:
- Battlefield 2 (PC - 5vs5)
- Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath (PC)
- Need For Speed Prostreet (PC)
- NBA Live 2008 (Xbox 360)
- UEFA Euro 2008 (Xbox 360 - 2vs2)
The prizes offered for this event are quite huge - over RM 35,000 (S$ 15,000) worth of prizes in the form of PCs from Acer, Microsoft Hardware products, EA vouchers and of course, some cold hard cash. The prizes distribution was a bit imbalanced though.
Unfortunately, almost all participation slots for the event were snatched in only 3 days after the event announcement came out. Even after the organizer added more slots, they were all gone within hours. Still, a number of Malaysian players such as [r0r1]m00tsumi and few more of his r0r1k0n mates managed to register before the slots fully taken.
Multiplay will be at Singapore to cover the event next week, so don’t forget to check out the coverage later. Meanwhile, feel free to browse through the event’s micro site through the link below.

On 28th to 29th June, while waiting for the UEFA European Football Championship 2008 Finals to start, you might want to try your luck (and skills) on the official UEFA Euro 2008 video game by EA Sports during *scape Game On! Euro 2008 competition.

Boasting around RM 2,800 (S$ 1,200) of cash prizes, this event will be held at *scape Youth Centre located at Sommerset Road, just behind Orchard Road - the nation’s retail heaven. For this event, each participants are charged S$ 10 for registration fees (it’s now F.O.C) and the platform of choice will be Xbox 360.
If you want to get more physical, you can drop your gamepad and gather your mates to join the human foosball tournament. The whole carnival will then be closed with a live screening of UEFA Euro 2008 finals. For more information, check out their official website through the link below.
Phewh, that is quite a handful of event, isn’t it? I bet we going to see more of them as 2nd half of 2008 continues.
