Last month DailyTech reported on VGChartz’s announcement that the popular Nintendo Wii had surpassed the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales. At the time the statement was somewhat controversial and was met with some skepticism by fans of the other platforms.

Now another source, The Financial Times, has analyzed worldwide sales data through July, and through August for Japan, to determine the real console winner.

The FT’s conclusion? There have been 9 million Wiis, 8.9 million Xbox 360s and 3.7 million PS3s sold worldwide.
